First Air flight 7F-973 , Boeing 737-2R4C registration C-FNVK from Yellowknife to Cambridge took off from Yelloknife and was in the initial climb when the number engine 2 suffered a failure. The crew declared an emergency and diverted back to Yellowknife for a safe landing half hour after departure

On 30 October 2013 the Canadian TSB reported that the CASI was informed that the initial findings indicate that an internal failure occurred between the compressor and the turbine sections, resulting in surging, vibration and high temperatures. Prior to shut down, the forward section of the vortex disruptor tube appeared to have broken off. There is no evidence that the tube went through the compressor. The engine is being replaced and, once complete, the aircraft will be returned to service
